It's been a long search, trying to fill Selwyn's shoes, but the Hearts are now a six piece band again.
We are very pleased to say that Mike Hayler is joining us on clarinet and saxophone.
Mike who lives in the Cheshire area, will be joining the band full time in March.

The Line-up |
The Hearts, have undergone a few personnel changes over the past couple of years, we lost Clive Millward suddenly in February 2008, then in July 2009 Selwyn Newton fulfilled his long standing wish of retiring to France, at the end of 2009 Dave Smith decided that he no longer enjoyed the travelling and late nights, so he decided to retire in order to spend more time with his family.
However, things go on and just to ring the changes the Hearts have had a slight 'make-over' moving into 2010. For long time fans of the band something you either loved or hated, the band uniform will be changing. Gone are the hawaiian shirts, the Hearts will now be turning out in more formal attire. Have no fear it will be the same great music, you'll just be able to hear it better..... no more cries of "the shirts are too loud"!
We will be have a regular line-up from March this year but in the meantime the reed chair for Feb will be taken by: Zoltan Sagi, Amy Roberts, Mike Hayler(our newest member) and John Crocker. |

Dave Smith Hangs Up His Banjo by Selwyn Newton |
The Midland jazz scene will never be quite the same again, but then, neither will The Heart of England Jazz Band, since Dave Smith hung up his banjo, just before Christmas. As with most of the ‘senior’ members of The Heart of England Jazz Band, Dave had played in The Arthur Brown Jazz Band, joining it in 1987 and remaining therein until 1997 when Arthur joined Pete Allen and with the acquisition of Pete Ainge The Heart of England Jazz Band was born.
Inspired, as were many of us of Dave’s generation., by the Trad/Skiffle boom of the 1950s, Dave initially learned to play the guitar and joined a school-based skiffle group; he transferred to the banjo in the late 1950s. The first jazz band he joined in the early 1960s, called The Saratoga Jazz Band, was led by Tony Billingsley. Dave then took time out from jazz until 1976 whilst family commitments took priority.
On returning to the jazz scene, Dave joined ‘Big’ Eric Dodgson’s Trent Valley Stompers, staying for three and a half years, until joining The Dixieland Stompers in 1979. Avid for even more notoriety, he also joined the The Royal Garden Hot Six - an offshoot of The Dixieland Stompers. In 1982 Dave formed The Muskrat Ramblers, with Dave Chisholm.
